Mosquito plague

Due to the massive amount of rain and standing water from flooding in Victoria at the moment we are suffering huge amounts of mosquitoes which attack mercilessly. As we are working towards starting up our own flock of Dorpers, I was wondering if any sheep farmers on the forum could tell us whether this is a problem for sheep and how do you deal with it to help them out?

Vaccinating a small number of lambs

Having recently inherited 5 Ewes, a Ram and 2 Alpacas on a property we bought I now find myself with 2 dorper lambs. All the vaccines and vaccinators for sheep seem to be to vaccinate a whole herd i.e. 100 sheep +
It looks like I will have all up about 5 lambs to vaccinate and I don't want to waste a load of vaccine.
Are there smaller vaccine packs or individual jabs that one can buy and if so where?
Any help on this would be much appreciated

Orphan Lambs and Foxes

I have three orphaned dorper lambs, they are coming up to 8 weeks old and I am still locking them in a fox proof pen at night. I weaned them a few days ago and they are happy to go to bed for lamb pellets and spend the day munching in the paddock. They have been mixing with my five adult sheep this week and tonight seemed reluctant to leave them, just wondering when they will be safe from foxes as I know we have some on the property? They would be from 8 to 10 kilos now.

New sheep about to lamb, not vaccinated or wormed. What do I do please?

Hi, I've just purchased some 2-3yo Dorper girls and they've come from a property where they've run around pretty much untouched. They haven't been wormed or vaccinated since they were bought as babies by the previous owners. They are in good condition so I don't think they're too wormy but I obviously want to drench them anyway. The thing is that two of them look ready to lamb at any moment and the others aren't far behind. I'm wondering if it's safe to worm and vaccinate this close to lambing or whether I should hold off?

Do lambs need to be treated prior to Consumption?

We have 10 Acre plot in Adelaide Hills, and have some several Dorper lambs been born recently, we plan to eat one of the whether lambs.

The Lambs and have no vaccinations or worming at all. The small flock has no sign of disease, apart from some loose stools spotted. Currently the grass is green and plently of water around.

Is it safe to slaughter and consume (cooked) untreated lambs?

Also we were thinking slaughter at around 6 months of age. Would this age be recommended?

green eye crust on lamb

Hi everyone,

I have a ram whos 8 months old and sometimes very randomly, usually in the cold weather he gets a bit of green eye crush. Kind of like if a human had a bit of green sleep build up on the eye. It usually doesnt last very long, maybe a day and disappears the following day but its happened a few times now. Anyone have any idea of what it might be? His overall eye health looks and seems healthy and hes a happy jumping around ram, just this random green crust.

Dorper and Johnson grass

Hi we have a 1 ha paddock and are looking at running some dorper sheep. The paddock has been cleared of existing lantana however has pockets of Johnson grass mixed with other types of grasses and weeds. How toxic is Johnson grass and is it essential to get rid of all of it before introducing the stock? Cheers.
