Killing saplings

Hi Everyone,

I am having a hard time getting rid of saplings. Can anyone recommend poisons to use and or techniques. I have used grazon and it doesnt seem to be doing much to the hardier trees, before I up the dose on it, I wanted to see if there were any other tricks? Also probably a silly question but what kind of dye can I use in it mark the saplings I have already done? Thank you for any advice you can give me :)

Hi there,

regrowth is my nightmare. However, there are two methods I use.

1. Grazon Extra. This must be mixed at the correct rate. More is not better as if you use too much the plant will shut down in self defence, and not absorb the product. The plant must be thoroughly wet on all leaf surfaces. Use a wetter product with it. There are a number of products on the market, so ask your rural supplier which brand he recommends. He will also be able to supply you with the red marker dye. This dye is added to the product in your sprayer/tank along with the  Grazon Extra, so that you can see where you have sprayed. Add the wetter and Grazon then add a couple litres of water then add the dye and then add the rest of the water, so that the water going in will mix it all up for you. The very suseptible seedlings and young shrubs will respond in ten days or so, but the more resistant ones, such as swamp box can take several weeks before you start to see a result. Grazon is only useful for young regrowth if the regrowth is more than a couple of metres high, then you may need to use Tordon on a cut stump

2.Tordon. Make up the mix exactly according to instructions. You won't need wetter or dye. As with Grazon, more is not better. Cut the sapling off at ground level and thoroughly wet the cut area. You have 30 seconds to do this before the roots stop pushing sap up and returning it to the roots. With some species you may need to go back in a few months and hit them with Grazon Extra if some shoots reappear on the cut stump. It's a good idea not to cut he stump lower than 40 cm high, so that you can see where they are and don't end up staking a tyre. Yep, been there and done that!

Hope this helps,

Barb

Hi Inman,

Welcome to the forum great to have you as part of the community.

I have have had good success using Grazon and roundup (Glyphosate) on Eucalyptus saplings up to 2 metres in height. The roundup seems to increase the effiacy of both chemicals. Check the roundup label for spot spraying rates.

As for dye, try and get some marker dye. You can it in a 5 litre container which is cheap and works well. Marker dye is what is used in broadacre spray units without GPS, foam and dye mix together to povide a marker of what area has been sprayed. As much as you try the marker dye always seems to get everywhere.

Hope this is of assistance.

Regards,

Charlie
