Paralysis Tick Prevention - sheep/lamb

Hi, We nearly list our dorper lamb to a paralysis tick yesterday. Just wondering if anyone has any preventative measures they use?

Hi BecS, Have been away all day and have only just seen your post. Ask your vet for a suitable backline for your animals. As Spring progresses into summer ticks will become more of a problem. The dog tick and the scrub tick are deadly unless found and removed as soon as possible- they cause paralysis and death. It's good idea to check your animals every day in tick season. The cattle tick found in some areas of Qld does not kill by venom as the former two types do, but if the animal is heavily infested it can literally suck it dry of blood. If you are in a very 'ticky' area you should find a suitable back line for your animals as soon as you can. Symptoms of tick poisoning usually begin with paralysis of the back legs, with the animals legs collapsing under them and moving forward to involve the throat and breathing. do not force water or milk on the animal as due to paralysis of the muscles in the throat, the water or milk can enter the lungs which will prove fatal. Ask the vet to teach you how to entubate an animal so that you can put a feeding tube into the stomach and give it fluids that way, until the animal is able to swallow again. Went to another vet and he uses bravecto spot on on his sheep so i am about to trial the same - fingers crossed
