Used Tractor Help

Hello Need help! We are looking to purchase a used tractor for under $5-7k We are hoping to purchase a tractor with a grater blade on the front and a slasher on the back or can add these implements later. The adverts always sound so technical so hoping some more Tractor-savvy people could tell me what to look for in purchasing a used tractor. What is a PTO? How many hours is "well used"? What do I look at to see if a slasher is well past its use by date? What brands are "cheap chinese" to stay away from? Besides a slasher, what else does the nechanics on the rear adapt to? How will I know if a tractor can adapt a slasher? Yep, I have zero ideas on a tractor! Any help appreciated no matter how small!

I am new , but may be I can shed some light.

 

1 PTO : (Power Take off ) is used to provide power to any implements you connect to the tractor.  Without PTO it is almost useless.

 

2. Buying with some implements may save you money. Check the prices on the market.

 

3. Hours ? - No idea,but compare with cars, you need a engine overhaul around 100,000k which is about 10,000 hours running

Also look for the term 3pl, which is '3 Point Linkage' which is what attaches your slasher etc to the rear of your tractor.

Slasher condition is like most equipment; is the deck still in good condition.

The appearance of a unit tells you alot of how its been looked after.

Is the deck in good condition ie no holes, no cracks, no dodgy repairs, bits of metal welding or pop riveted on as a repair, wire holding it together. Is there any slop in the shafts through the bearings, are the bearings noisy or falling apart.

Check the wear on the blades, pulleys and belts.

Some of the chinese slashers are quite good, but dont buy a cheap small unit and then overwork it.

Hi,

A tractor is like most things, "what you pay, is what you will get".

Personally I would not buy a tractor with a grader blade on the front, I would buy one with a Front End Loader on it. This is because with a grader blade it has really only got 1 use, whereas with a front end loader you can use it for lots of other things and with the right operator, grading can be done.

Further to this, as previously mentioned make sure that it has 3 Point Linkage on it as that is what is needed to fit numerous attachments on it. Some of the attachments are a Grader Blade, Saw Bench, Carryall, Slasher, Mower, Super Spreader, Cultivator, Harrows, Disc Plough, Post Hole Digger, Rotary Hoe, Crane, Ripper, Stick Rake and Hay Forks.

A 3rd Arm is required to use the attachments as they all have 2 Round Linkage Pins on the bottom of them which you connect the arms on the tractor to them and then one end of the 3rd Arm is attached on the top of the attachment and the other end to the middle of the tractor by the way of using 2 Pins.

The PTO (Power Take Off) is a very important part of a tractor as it is used to drive any of the attachments by using a Power Take Off Shaft between the tractor and the implement and this is operated by placing the PTO in gear and when the clutch is left out the drive will start. An example of this is a Slasher.

Do your "Homework" prior to buying one using the internet Search so that you get a good understanding on how everything attaches and works.

The 3rd Arm and pins can be easily purchased on eBay at reasonable prices, but check your measurements (Diameter and Length) on the tractor and attachment/s before you buy them.
