Fireweed help

Hi , we have 25 acres . We have a 4 acres paddock that is higher up on the land that has fireweed in flower about 10cm tall it is separated by a 15 meter strip of bushland and only very small sparse fireweed in the lower paddock that we have removed by hand. What is the best way to treat it and can I spray it with a backpack sprayer ? Thanks

Hi Karinya,

Welcome to the small farms forum and thanks for the question.

If the plants are sparse you could spot spray them with herbicide, if there are too many plants to spot spray you will need to use a boom spray. Spot spraying is definately easier then pulling the plants out.

Below is a link to a previous thread regarding fireweed that you may also find helpful

I am new to this too, but am leaning quick. I have some pest weeds as well, prob everyone does, but look closely at what your pasture consists of & what your livestock need. I have sheep and may have cattle at some stage, so I try and cover every base from every angle, fencing, water and feed.....so I do not exclude changes later without a lot of re working, anyway, most of the weeds I want to remove or reduce are broad leaf, but you cant just go spraying willy nilly if your new to things, as a lot of the herbicides will also then kill your broadleaf pasture varieties that you want to keep. So on that size, I say careful spot spraying most likely, depend on pasture composition, but I also mechanically remove a lot, after it rained for a bit, I spent a few hrs removing a lot of weeds that were mature and easy enough to remove. My aim is to lower though, not to eradicate completely - too much else too do :)
