Dear Matthewtengoats, Congratulations on wanting to run goats. They are the most wonderful and interesting creatures. 1. First you will need to set up suitable fencing- full instructions for doing this can be found in Farming Meat Goats: Breeding, Production and Marketing. 2. Provide some shelter for the mums and kids is you intend to breed your goats. 3. Water- Goats drink from 4- 12 Lt per day depending upon climate and whether they are dry or lactating. 5. How many can you run per hectare? This will depend upon your pasture. But the rule of thumb is, where you could run one cow, you can run 5 goats. I suggest you have a look around your area and talk to people who have cattle on their blocks- full sized cattle not Dexter or other small breeds. 6. Please don’t let your kids give them names if you intend them for the dinner table. I have seen some pretty upset children when little Freda ends up on the dinner table. Regards and good luck, Barb

Goats have character etc, but are pests for a number of reasons, you may find out. Anyways... The number will depend on a few things, the land, pasture or plants there and how much work your willing to do, if you hand feed and have time and funds you could have a hell of a lot, or 10 may eat the place bare and cost you quite a bit too feed atm. So depends. As for the part about getting attached, well, get a much larger acreage and do not have them around the house, you will find on 10 acre each one will get known, and be a favorite for someone, and you will be seen as a killer if you think your going to eat your own meat, if you sell them wont be any better..... So do you want to be a farmer or run a business, or have a lifestyle and a few pet animals ?
