Managing 10 acres

We are looking at a 10 acre property. We love the house but the property has fully manicured lawns and gardens needing lots of work. We are retired and don't want to spend our days just keeping a good lawn. We want to minimise man hours with maybe a few sheep and perhaps plant lots of bushes to cut down the amount of acres needing work. There is a small established vege garden some fruit trees and a chook pen. Ithere is about 2 acres with a dam fenced off which we could perhaps put a couple of sheep on but we want to fence off a whole lot more to put more animals on to keep grass under control. Are we dreaming at our age or is it possible? Thoughts and advice would be great.

Hello

Definitely possible.

Don't let the gardens put you off, while they require a lot of work to stay manicured they may only take some work just to keep at a manageable size. Once a sheep strays amongst the gardens you probably won't have much garden left lol

Go for it!

Hi Kalin,

Welcome to the forum.

All that you have described is possible. To keep the workload to a minimum I would look at a breed of sheep that sheds its wool, that will greatly reduce work such as shearing/crutching and also the incidence of fly strike. If you didn't want the hassle of keeping livestock you could always get yourself a small tractor and slasher or large ride on mower to keep the 2 acres under control. There is something very theraputic about being outside and mowing grass.

Regards,

Charlie
