Plants list toxic for sheep

Can anyone refer me to a site that can tell me what plants are toxic to sheep? I am looking to plant a wind break and Photinia and Leightons green seem to have mixed responses.

Hi Kaz,

Your state's Dept. of Primary Insustries should have lists of these, also the MLA may have info on this too.

I would like to refer you to my book, Farming Meat Goats but it is out of stock at present and the 2nd edition I'm working on at present, won't be printed until next year. However, here is a list of a few common hedge plants which are poisonous to goats and sheep:

Azalea, rhodedendron, Oleander, Yellow oleander (Thevetia peruviana), Yesterday Today and Tomorrow (Brunsfelsia), White Cedar (seeds), Green cestrum, Yew (Taxus baccatta), Avocado - all parts of the plant and fruit- contain a cardiac glycoside that ruminants can't break down as they lack the enzyme to do so, Sugar Gum (Eucalyptus cladocalyx), Manna Gum (E. viminalis) - new red growth contains cyanide. Also the prunus family- Cherry, peach, apricot etc., these contain prussic acid (cyanide).

If you are in the southern states you could plant conifirs. However, these might be a bit slow growing. Hope some of this info helps.

Cheers,
