Wanting an income new to farming

Hi there, my husband and I are wanting to get into farming and growing. But we don’t know what is the best thing to do for an income. We are city folk and are getting out. Looking for blocks of land now. 2 or 3 hours from Brisbane. We are trying to figure out what is the best thing to do for novices like us. I love to grow so was thinking of Hemp, olives, taro, macadamias. Any suggestions would be great. Hubby wants to try livestock cows, pigs, I would prefer alpacas. Zbg2mbut I am a little worried about not knowing enough in this field. We are really interested in making a new start and willing to learn. Any advice would be great.

Hi Tanis, Thanks for the question and welcome to the small farms forum. Its always a hard question to answer of what to do. I would firstly try to find an enterprise that you are passionate about as you will always put more effort into something that you enjoy doing and it is more likely to succeed. Secondly, I would look for an small farm enterprise that is well suited to your farms soil type, rainfall and climate. There is no point is selecting a crop that is not well suited to the prevailing farm conditions. Thirdly, which you have already identified is to educate yourself, there is only so much that you can learn from books and reading it is very helpful to work alongside another farmer that has experience in that particular enterprise. I hope you have found the answer useful. Regards, Charlie
