Starting a farm on the sunshine coast QLD

Hi Guys,

 

Im an absolute novice when it comes to farming, although i have an endless desire to make this new venture of my working life work and prosper.  I would love to link up with other small farmers in the local area (Sunshine coast in QLD) to learn and talk about what the fundamentals are in starting a farm.  Seeing how a successful small farm is run is one of my first steps.  We are looking at farming a variety of animals, so we can produce great organic food for the local community.

 

Anyway, any help as a starting point (either from a networking point of view or via another means) would be great.

Growing organic food sounds like a great idea.

 

What are you thinking of doing?  Vegies, Chooks, animals, orchard, bees? When you decide what you might like to do, then you can ask your questions and please include land size, soil type, water availability and so on, as this helps us answer your questions.

Hi Barb, thanks for your response.  Im not sure how the website allows me to answer your response, so i thought i would just respond/rephase my original question.

 

We have 28 acres in Eumundi on the sunshine coast.  Soil profile is rich orange clay.  Most areas are open with various types of grasses and other areas are have low density bush with great understorey organic matter.  We have a creek running through the property, alhtough seems to only hold water in high rain days.  We have a declared human consumption water bore and we will be looking at using that to supply the animnals (if suitable).  Might dig a dam, but at this stage, we will hold off on that.  My first thought with produce and in order of what i think i can implement on a new farm are;

 

Chooks for egg production (maybe 100 to start)

Bees

Goats

Cows

Pigs

 

I am open to other suggestions, but the above is a list of what i love.  The chooks i have experience with (albeit only 10).

 

Anyway, love you hear further comments regarding starting off as im really keen to learn from like minded people that are doing what i want to do.

Im a young Carpenter, recently Studying horticulture and also looking at setting up a small farm in the sunshine coast area and would love to hear the ins and outs of your endeavours.

Hi Jamie,

Sounds like a good plan.

regarding the goats/sheep. You will need to put in fences the exclude them from escaping the property and from your gardens and orchards. Make sure if using mesh that it is suitable for goats, that is: 8x30x 90. Explanation: 8 strand x 30 cm squares x90 cm high. If the mesh is too narrow, the goats may put their heads through it and strangle.

 

Put the posts 5 m apart and put a strainer wire at the bottom then attach the mesh to this with fencing clips  and put another strainer wire on top and attach the top of the mesh to this also . Run two lines of barbed wire spaced at 15 cm apart on top of the mesh to discourage jumping by the goats.   For your orchards, I would suggest that drip irrigation is the way to go. Saves a lot of water.
