The Importance of Persevering: Megan Buckley’s Small Farm Story

We had the pleasure of speaking to our 2nd prize winner and recipient of the COX 27T log splitter, to learn more about her inspiring small farm journey.

Megan began her small farm journey when she decided to move from the city of Melbourne to rural Victoria in 2016. The dream was to leave behind the hustle and bustle of the city, to create a quieter and slower paced life for herself and her family. She wanted a place where her daughter could gain practical life skills, and to learn where food comes from.

The importance of persevering

In her own words, “We have learnt our farming skills from trial and error, and by having a can-do attitude.” Early on, she faced a tough lesson which made her realise the importance of persevering. In 2019, Megan and her family started a free-range egg business, converting old caravans into chicken coops and raising 1500 chickens at their peak. The business had grown to supply their local farmers markets, cafes, and wineries. However, a year later during a devastating heatwave, they lost a substantial number of their chickens. Megan used this loss as an opportunity for reflection, ultimately leading to the decision to exit the egg business and return her farm to its original purpose of enjoyment.

Megan’s experience serves as an important reminder to other small farm owners who may be starting out - that it's okay to pivot and change direction when things don't go as planned. There will be many challenges along the way but it’s important to mitigate your risks where possible.

A major risk Megan identified on her farm was fire, due to their proximity to other farms. She explains, "Fire is a risk for us and I use my mix of livestock to reduce the fuel load." They strategically use the livestock to help reduce the fuel load by containing them in a small area and moving them regularly. The pigs and cattle eat the grass, and the camels and goats graze on other plants.

Theft was another concern, as several farms in her area had been victims. Luckily, she has a good relationship with her neighbours who look out for each other when there are unfamiliar or suspicious vehicles in the area.

Another common risk Megan identified, was that her home was underinsured. This was due to the recent shortages in building materials and labour, which have dramatically increased replacement costs. Many small farm owners often forget to update their policies when there are material changes on their farm. Megan has since switched to Farmstyle Insurance and taken advantage of the home replacement cost calculator to ensure she is properly covered. She happily shared, "Farmstyle Insurance has provided me with better coverage at a similar or cheaper price to my previous small farm insurance policy."

We hope that by sharing Megan’s story, you will be inspired to persevere in your small farm journey through all the hardships that may come.
