All terrain vehicles (ATVs, also known as quad bikes) are one piece of farm equipment that most farmers can’t do without. Although they are not designed  to be a tractor, on most small farms they can reduce the need for one.

ATVs are capable of a variety of farming tasks, including transporting people and equipment from A to B, towing a trailer, spraying, spreading and much more. For those that don’t know anything about motorbikes, selecting a hobby farm ATV can be a daunting task.

If you're not familiar with farm tractors, choosing one that’s suitable for a small farm can be a daunting task. Will a compact tractor suffice and how important is tractor size?

A good starting point when choosing a small-farm tractor is to be clear just what you want a tractor for. If it is just to mow an acre or two, or to cart a few small bales of hay, then a ride-on mower or quad bike with a tow bar may be all you want.

However, if you need to cultivate soil, spread some fertiliser or feed out some large round bales, then you are likely to require what I like to term a ‘real tractor'.  Unlike most ride-ons, a real tractor is full unit construction where the engine, transmission and rear drive train are all housed in rugged castings.  It will also have a Power Take Off (PTO), a three-point linkage and external hydraulics capability.

For most small-farm operations, all your requirements can be found within the Compact Utility (compact) range of tractors. These are essentially small tractors of 15kW (kilowatt) to 50kW (20hp to 70hp) that have many of the exact same features that are found in larger, more expensive tractors.

Petrol supply carburettor Massey Ferguson 35 Petrol

Hi there, can somebody please help me solve a small problem, im restoring an old Massey Ferg 35 Petrol Tractor, its almost complete ...
when it starts its idling ok, but as soon as i turn the throttle lever up it starts to cough and splatter and seems like its drowning in too much fuel perhaps, we've changed the needle and seat in the carbi but no difference,
should i just replace the whole carbi with a new one or is there something else we're missing???
much appreciated , regards Ant

Tractors

Looking for advice on tractors. Currently running a 230acre grazing property. Tractor will be mainly used for slashing, spraying, fertilizer spreading, general purpose. Not looking at Chinese. Sticking with knowns due to serviceability. Considering JD5055/JD5075 or Massey Ferguson 2625 (64hp). The JD range have all bells and whistles but 6k dearer. MF is no frills workhorse mechanical everything. Chasing thoughts or experiences with these models. I'm leaning towards MF for price and simplicity. My old tractor is a David Brown 880 (1970) and the old girl is getting tired.

Digital technology is becoming increasingly important in the agricultural industry and many farmers have recognised the very valuable role that it plays in helping them to better manage their operations.

To the layman, the notion of weighing a silo sounds absurd. How could it be possible to weigh something as huge and heavy as a silo?

To those in the know, weighing the contents of silos and tanks is a perfectly normal practice - and for many enterprises and business, it’s an integral part of their everyday operations.
