Showing sheep

Hi everyone,

My wife and seven year old daughter have recently attended a sheep and wool show. Naturally, at the show, there were sheep being judged. My daughter came home and told me that she would like to enter ‘Peaches’, one of our mobile lawn mowing animals from our small hobby flock into a show.

While Peaches may never win any beauty contests, she is the daughter of a white Suffolk ewe and a black Suffolk ram, I want to encourage my daughter to understand that to achieve something in life, there is usually a process where there is preparation involved before you can do what you want.

Ultimately, I see this as a great life lesson. So I was wondering if anyone out there has any experience showing sheep, and if so, can you provide any tips and outline what is required through the whole process. Peaches is one of our more friendly and inquisitive ewes and is about 12 months old. Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers Dennis

Hi Dennis,

Welcome to the small farming forum and thanks for the question.

At sheep shows there are usually a range of classes based on breed, age/type and if the sheep are housed or unhoused. Most sheep that are shown are housed inside and fed a balanced ration of hay/grain. The sheep are usually prepared well in advance of the show which can include hoof trimming, fleece trimming and face cleaning.

Your daughter might be able to spend some time at a local sheep stud to get some experience around how they prepare (feed, house, groom) the sheep prior to attempting the process herself.

I hope this has been of some assistance.

Regards,

Charlie
