Very Green at this farming idea. Any help and suggestions welcome.

Hi guys, My wife and i are looking at buying 100 acres(in the middle of negotiations) in the Northern rivers of nsw. Never been a farmer but spent a couple of years working on a dairy I'm thinking about buying a dozen or more weaner steers and letting them suport themselves...... water is not a problem thanks to the 6 dams and the land is nice and green for this time of year. I work fifo so im home every 4 weeks for a week but want something that isnt going to take to much for my wife to gain control of while im not here. I understand im going to need an abn and pic? where do i get these? Any idea what breeds i should look at and what price i may pay? any other suggestions are welcome!!! Cheers Cam

Hello Cam,

You will need a PIC (as you correctly ask) - Google pic nsw dpi and this will take you to a link and explain how to get a PIC - very straight forward.

You will also need a National Vendor Declaration (NVD) if you wish to sell any cattle - Google MLA - Meat and Livestock Australia. You need your PIC first.

Don't rush to buy your cattle. Suggest you check what the neighbours are running and how they look to see what is suitable for your area. Attend the local market and watch and see what sort of cattle make what sort of prices. I would further suggest you look at some weaned  steers perhaps 280 kg - 400 kg. These cattle have some maturity and will be largely self sufficient and allow you to gain some confidence. Keep your stocking rate conservative while you gain experience and confidence and get to understand your block. If you do buy heifers you are unsure of their pregnancy status.

You do not necessarily need an ABN - This is a business structure issue and not a precise requirement for trading livestock (at least not at very low levels). Get some advice from your accountant to see if ABN is useful. You do have ATO lodgement requirements when you get an ABN  - seek advice.

If you get stuck getting your forms together, give me a bell on 0417 897 131 and I'll talk you through it.

Have Fun.

Hi cam,

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the question.

The idea of weaner cattle is a good one, they are smaller in size and less difficult to handle than cows, they can be easily traded if it does get dryand you lso you don't have the issue of bulls, calving, marking etc.

Regarding the ABN, To class your farm as a business and register for an ABN will need to turnover a minimum of $20,000 per financial year. A turnover less than this and it will be classed as a hobby farm. If your turnover is above $20,000 and you don't have an ABN or quote it on invoices a supplier can withhold 46.5% of the sale.

What have other members done when they were starting out?
