Biodegradable soap for septic systems?

Hi guys, I have just set up my new septic system using a pair of IBCs and want to do the right thing and minimise the negative impact the outlet (soak away) water will have on the environment. I'm thinking that we really should be using biodegradable washing products. I've found biodegradable dishwashing liquid at Woolies, easy, but couldn't find any similar soaps or handwashes. In fact, the vast majority of handwashes were ANTI-bacterial, exactly what I DON'T want! What do you guys use in your septic systems? Should I be concerned about using regular soaps and stuff? Thanks in advance, Greg . (BTW, this shot was taken before the system was completely finished and backfilled etc.)

Hi Greg,

Great to have you as part of the small farming community, it's wonderful to see you trying to do your bit for the environment.

I hate to say it but growing up on a farm we never worried about the type of washing powders and other products we used. That said, our septic rubble drain was constantly getting blocked up and thats probably why.

Ecostore does a range of biodegradable washing powders and other products, you can find them here
http://www.ecostore.com.au/categories/laundry

I hope this is of assistance and please let us know how the products perform.

Regards,

Charlie

. Thank you for the reply Charlie. I'm not actually looking for clothes washing products, we don't live there, (NB. I wish we could!) it's just a weekender, so we do clothes washing back at home. It's hand soaps and/or liquid hand washes that I'm looking for and I see that Ecostore do them as well. I'll read into them. Thanks again! Greg

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the reply, out of interest have you come across any environmentally friendly products that can be used to help with blocked drains?

Thanks,
Charlie

Hi Charlie, No mate, I haven't. Mind you, that's something I haven't been looking for either. Greg
