Electric Fences n more?

Lots of newbie questions here. Stuff i cant find in books/www.
1.Wanting to contain animals with electric fence. But would the zap required for a cow harm a pig or goat?
2. Want to keep piglets in a paddock but there is a dam in paddock. Is this safe? Can they swim? Get stuck in mud? Will it need fencing off?
3. Teeth trimming piglets. Is this really necessary for raising piglets. Sounds barbaric to me. ?

Hi Shelle, the zap wont harm the pigs and pretty sure same with goats. One wire a foot off the ground will keep pigs but some people use 2 wires. Check River Cottage Australia for reference.
Pigs love mud and wallowing and will make a mess of any dam and will really muddy it up. Not good if you want to use that water for stock.
Never heard of trimming teeth on little pigs. Has been done on older boar pigs as they do tend to grow outwards of their jaw, but even then have never had to trim them.
They are a fun animal pigs but they do make a mess of anything they get into. Good secure pens and a electric hotwire a must.

The dam they have access to is leaking.
I aim to use the pigs to repair it. "Gleying" is the technique. It's not full, but deep for piglets. As soon as it empties, we get going on relying, with is basically: add veg matter/manure/trampling creates seal. Sounds too good to be true doesnt it. So my back up is to use a polymer seal costing $500. And if that fails, it's being renamed a bmx bike track and enjoyed by grandkids as is. So I can't lose:)

Well thats very interesting concept, you will have to keep us posted on how this goes.
I have a dam that wont hold due to lack of clay and was told an excavator can come and try and re dig and line it with clay but with no guarantee it will work.
So i purchased a 22000 litre tank and connected it to 2 others and juggle water back and forwards from shed to house and seem to get by. Although in Summer when you get a storm it becomes a mad panic with gutter cleaning and checking downpipes because every drop valueable.
We are not only off the grid we have no other water to access other than rain.
