Trade Apple/Fruit Trees from Overseas? Any Suggestions Please

Hello everyone, I searched alot but couldn't find any answer hope anyone help me out. I want to start a small farm here in Australia. My relatives have a huge farm back home and they are willing to support me by any means to start a farm here. My questions is can I bring Apple trees from back home to Australia? I don't know may be it sound confusing but it can saves 4-5 years of time if I were to start from planting small trees of apple. Is it allowed? Are there any serious health issues when bringing any fruit trees in? Can you please tell me who are the best to contact and dig some information about trading trees? Or is it just prohibited at all ? Where is the best place to start the farm? WA, VIC, NSW, QL? I'm willing to travel any part of Australia. Also is 500k-900k enough to start a small farm? Or is it in millions? Any support is much appreciated Thank you very much Regards

Hello You can start by asking the Department of Agriculture for your state however I can already predict the answer will be no due to Australias strict quarentine laws. It may save you years but it could decimate the Australian industry and cost Aussie Farmers their incomes if Disease/crop decimating insects are bought in. Where is your home country?

hi,

It is unlikely that you would be permitted to import plants of any sort without a licence and a long quarantine of them (also a very expensive process), even if the licence to import is granted, which I don't think it would be.

Here in Australia, we have had some major disasters occurr in the past few years. For example the citrus industry was almost wiped out around the Gayndah/Monto area in Queensland a few years ago, when someone from Asia imported Kaffir Lime trees illegally. The plants were carrying a type of citrus canker which cost millions of dollars to eradicate. Every citrus tree in the region had to be pulled up and burned with major losses to citrus growers in the region.  The fines for importing plants without the necessary licences and quarantines is very large.

The upfront costs involved in importing plants into Australia is prohibitive unless you are a very large company. To find further information, the web address of Commonwealth Dept of Agriculture is: agriculture.gov.au  On the left hand side of the page you will see a menu. click on import and it will open a page with all the various options on it. The phone number of the dept. is: 1800 900 090 It is a free call.

The best place for growing apples in Australia is where it is cool. Tasmania, or mountain areas of the mainland and so on. There are many commercial nurseries here in Australia that specialise in apples and stone fruit and it would be worth checking them out. However I suggest that you do some market research before you start, because for many fruits and vegetables the market is oversupplied, unless you are aiming for the export market: Another area where you will need to check out the licences, markets and so on needed to do so. As suggested, your local Dept of Agriculture in your state will be able to direct you to the correct depts you need to contact if you decide to go ahead with applying to import plants.

Hope some of this is useful information for you.

Kind regards,

Barb
