What to do with 10 acres ?

Hi

 

We have a 10 acre residential/rural pasture block with small creek in Gladstone, it has access to a small bore and fairly heavy brown soil.

The soil sample gave a 3/5 star rating, needing some calcium, phosphorous, potassium and zinc.

Wanting to ask if there was anything we could do for supplement income on such a small acreage.

Rates and interest are fairly high.

I grew up on a medium size irrigation property and am a hands on guy, but also aware that there are risks associated.

Open to any ideas.

Sorry I can't answer your question as I am in the same position as you (new rural property owner looking to make a bit of an income) however I was just wondering whether you are in Gladstone Qld or South Australia?

Hi James,

ten acres will probably never make you a huge income. However, there are some things you can do with a small acerage that will earn a good supplemental income for you. Bees, as honey is a high value crop, is one thing. Learning how to keep bees and extract honey is not too difficult. Hives can be rented out to famers at so much per month, to pollinate crops too, the bonus is more honey to sell.

 

Running some free range chooks,or planting a small drip irrigated orchard.  Plant an acre of lavendar, or herbs to sell at local farmer's markets. Plant strawberries or, blue berries if you mean Gladstone South Australia.  If you fancy milking, keep a house cow. You could learn to make your own cheese and butter as a cow produces more milk than the average 4-6 people family can drink.  These are just a few ideas of the top of my head, and I'll bet once yo start to think about it, you can think of hundreds more.

Hi James this is an old topic, hope you are still around.
As you are in Queensland why not consider growing and processing Moringa oleifera the Miracle Tree.
Especially if you are willing to farm organically - no sprays.
There is some information on the web. I believe the water requirement is low.

You could set up an orchard with automatic irrigation system, and or grow vegetables.
