New to this and need advice

Hello All. I am looking at going into freerange pig farming on a small lot. Never farmed before so am collating information. The property will be in Victoria somewhere near Bright Myrtleford around there. My question is, to anyone who may know, how many pigs would it take to produce a good income and how much land would I need. I know these are very general questions but I need to start somewhere so this is the starting point. Thanks for you time. Alistair

Hi Alistaire,

I can't help with the number of pigs needed to have a sustainable income, but before you start, I know that in some states they have strict regulations about dealing with the effluent produced by pigs and the possibility of contamination of waterways. So I would suggest that you check with your local council and also the Dept of Primary Industries or it's equivalent in your state. The reason I am suggesting this is because if you set up your enterprise and it doesn't comply with regualtions, it could be very expensive to fix it to bring it up to the required standards.

Cheers and good luck with your project,

Barb

Thanks Barb appreciate your advice. I have called the council and await their return call. Cheers again.
