Tick treatment for dogs

Hi I have read an old comment by pindari regarding ticks & a cure for dogs (I think) where they use Sodium Ascorbate (vitamin c) to treat affected animals with quick recovery times. Can anyone or pindari comment a bit more on this as to where you get the product, mixing ratio with milk & how to administer it as once the signs of infection are obvious the dog doesnt want to eat or drink. Has anyone else used or know of anyone else who has used this method, I took one of my dogs to the vet yesterday & have been quoted minimum $600. Thanks Darren

Hi Darren,

It is my firm belief that Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) will not reverse the effects of the toxin introduced by the Paralysis tick: Ixodes holocyclus.

The ony treatments that are likely to be effective is the tick anti - toxin injections(expensive) and supportive treament to allay dehydration and keep energy levels up in the form of an IV drip.

Tragically, a friend has lost his much loved border collie Babe only this week due to paralysis tick poisoning.

Symptoms of tick poisoning are the following:

. ascending flaccid paralysis

.hind limb inco-ordination

. voice change

. difficulty with respiration

. death  due to respiritory failure.

If treatment is not innitiated swiftly then treatment may not be successful. The reason they don't eat or drink when they have paralysis from tick pisoning, is because the muscles of the oesophagus are paralised. If fluids or food is forced, it can enter the lungs and the animal will die from aspiration Pneumonia.

Best cure in this case is prevention, with one of the tick deterrents available. However, if your dog has tick poisoning, the earlier you initiate treatment from the vet, the greater the chance of saving your mate.

I hope your little mate comes through this o.k.,

Barb
