What Pasture Mix?

Slightly acidic, heaver type soil, basalt over granite base, liming soon with trace elements and extra calcium . Southern tablelands, 630mm, 850m.

Angus cows, calves to drop from 1 week Sep. This is only a trial 20 ac patch. the rest is a mix of improved and native .

Cocksfoot,Phalarris(sic),Pasp,Arrow clover and Red plus a whitishpink one.

Hi Barra,

Are you thinking of Cazbah bisurula? This is a deep-rooted, hard-seeded annual pasture that is adapted to a broad range of well drained soil types.

With regards to the pasture mix basing the grass component around cocksfoot and phalaris is a good idea, I would remove the paspalum as it is tropical species and is best established at the start of summer not autumn. If you concerned that you may have a broad leaf weed problem post sowing and will need to use a selective herbicide yu could leave out the red/arrow leaf clover and just include white and sub clover as these will be more tolerant to most herbicides.

You could also consider including plantain or chicory (only if the paddock is clean of broad leaf weeds) in the pasture mix, these are perennial species that have high levels of micro nutrients along with other animal health benefits.

Below is an excellent resource for pastures, on page 53 it shows the pasture seed count for a range of species, this is useful when working out what ratio of species to sow.
