Stocking Rates

I have property in Diggers Rest Victoria which I want to run sheep and cattle on. The property is 28 hectares in total with 1 hectare for the house yard and another aprox 2 hectares fenced off for trees and a dam making the grazing area about 25 hectares. The average annual rainfall is aprox 525mm per year. The pasture is mosly native grasses, phalaris with some sub clover. I was just wondering what you think the stocking rate would be for this property. Thanks

Hi,

this question is not as easy as it would seem to answer, as it depends on the area you are in, the annual rainfall and the particular year. some years the seasons and rainfall are good and some years not so good. Meaning, we can have droughts, floods or even fires. However, the Meat and Livestock Australia web site has a stocking rate calculator that may be useful to you. It is as follows :  mla.com.au/News-and-resources/Tools-and-calculators/Stocking-rate-cal

The website has calculators for cattle and sheep.

Hope this helps,

regards,

Barb
