Fish farming

Hi, my name is Debra Sala Tenna,

Can someone please let me know what fish can be farmed commercially in the Mansfield (Vic) area? Ideally I would like to farm Barramundi, how would they fare in this climate. I am planning to house the ponds in sheds and integrtare them into an aquaponics setup.

Thanks in advance, Debra Sala Tenna

Hi Debra,

You can have a look at the NSW Fisheries website which is:  dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries.

I'm not an expert on fish but having lived in the tropics for many years and also Mansfield for a while, I have an idea that Barramundi might find Mansfield a bit chilly. Maybe breeding trout or other cool water fish might be a little more successful. I lived in Mansfield years ago when my fathere was cutting timber there and from memory it gets very cold in winter.

Cheers and good luck,

Barb

I don't reckon barra would do any good in your area. Trout could work as a winter stock where you harvest them before the hot weather. Silver Perch would be the constant standby from my experience. Tried aquaponics for quite a while and am not a fan. I get better results from chooks and wicking beds. Cheers Rob.
