Do lambs need to be treated prior to Consumption?

We have 10 Acre plot in Adelaide Hills, and have some several Dorper lambs been born recently, we plan to eat one of the whether lambs.

The Lambs and have no vaccinations or worming at all. The small flock has no sign of disease, apart from some loose stools spotted. Currently the grass is green and plently of water around.

Is it safe to slaughter and consume (cooked) untreated lambs?

Also we were thinking slaughter at around 6 months of age. Would this age be recommended?

Hi Bushwich,

Welcome to the small farm forum and thanks for the question.

Untreated lambs will be fine to eat, all drenches and vaccines have a meat withholding period which is the amount of time that needs to lapse from administering to slaughter.

The average age to slaughter lambs is around 9 months, obviously the older and heavier they become the larger the cuts of meat will become.

If you are butchering yourself, I found some fantastic videos by Scott Rea on YouTube for processing lamb.
Expect it to take quite a long time for your first lamb but with a few decent tools you can really get efficient after a few lambs.
We've been processing all of our own meat now just north of you for 4 years and have never looked back.

Butchering and Dressing Lamb (DVD)  is an excellent DVD that shows a professional slaughterman demonstrating the techniques of home butchering and slaughtering lamb, from humane killing through to skinning. Butcher Ian Backhouse provides details on sectioning the lamb into different cuts, ready for cooking.
