Starting our LeStrand homestead

Hello everyone,

Carl and I have 5 acres of which whilst he goes to work else where, I would like to make the land work for us especially since the price of food in the supermarket is killing us in the hip pocket.

We already  have in place fruit trees and have just planted about 15 olive trees.

I would like to make our home like a sanctuary, and produce food for our family and am happy to share the excess with others.

Miniature Cattle

I have just recently found the Farm Style website and must say I'm very impressed with the range of content and information available. It is certainly wonderful to see so many people living their dreams and sharing their information to the "layman farmer".

I am very interested in miniature cattle and have approx 3 (very grassy at times) acres near Mackay Qld. Just minutes ago I purchased Margo Hayes book "Small Cattle for Small Farms" and eagerly wait its arrival to gather more info.

Hi All - COMPLETLY new to farming

Hi All,

From what I have read so far on the site, its really interesting, helpfull and a great site.  Just to tell you a bit about myself and why I am here.

Originally from Melbourne and moved to the south of Tassie, I've always wanted a small farm for myselfg, wife and my 2 boys to live on.  Well we just rented our place out and we bought a 5.8 acre farm on level ground.  It came with 4 sheep which the owners named "Living lawn mowers".

Hi new to the site.

My wife and I are looking into starting our own small hobby farm.

we are looking at Tasmainia. We want to do bees for honey for us and to sell. We want to do chooks for us and to sell. and some fruit trees for us and to sell. and we want to try wild mushrooms and maybe a few goats for meat if room permits. Proble is we want all this and don't know where to start. or how big of a block we need. any help would be good on all my topics.

Thanks Craig

Developing business training for small producers

Hello Farmstylers,

I'm Justin Bunt, have just wound up a South Coast NSW local foods distribution business (Pigeonhouse150) after 3 years. Despite fantastic demand for the products I was distributing the business never reached viable level because of supply issues - basically the small growers and producers were unable to scale up.

3rd time lucky!

So my previous 2 attempts to purchase land have fallen through but both have been definite learning curves! On Monday I sign the paperwork for a 137 acre property, a lot closer to home at Boorowa Shire. It has a permanent creek, improved pasture, dam and completely fenced. It has only 1km of grated road access the rest is tar!

New to all of this..

Hi all, love this website. To start: I have a few million questions. I purchased my land 2 years ago; 20 ac + 12 ac riverfront grazing licence. The  previous owners bred a small number of cattle for money, currently I am  aggisting about 45 sheep for a neighbour (no profit, just keep the grass down), but looking at moving forward to making my own money from the place. The former house burnt down in the black sat fires, before i bought it. I work full time shift work in melb, and can, at the moment only get there every second week.

Is 180 acres sustainable??

Hi all,

I am a 45Yo looking to purchase land to retire to as a 15 year goal. I am currently interested in 180 acres in the Oberon NSW area.

My goal is to purchase the land now which is a "blank canvas" of fenced and dammed paddocks. Over time I will need to improve with yards, shed and eventually a house.I am quite prepared to spend every weekend at the farm (currently live in Sydney). we have friends in the area that we visit regularly, and love the lifestyle and climate of the area.
