Dam erosion

Hi there,

I recently bought a farm with a reasonable size dam. Each time it rains the water looks murky and I suspect this is due to the sides of the dam being exposed to the run off and rain. I am trying to find out how I can stop this issue and came up with the following options:

1. Line the sides with plastic sheets and ensure the top edges are secure to the soil.

2. Plant bushes or grasses on the sides to stop erosion.

Dexter in the tropics

Hi there , we are livng in the tropical north of Qld and were wondering if Dexter would be ok up this way. If not what other miniture cattle would people sujest . we are looking at only having 6 cattle so to care for them by hand , as in tick treatments. Also what feed would suit them best , we have a high rainfall in the wet season and are always green.

New to raising chickens, looking for help/advice.

Hiya,

I would like to raise my own chickens and need advice on the best  breeds for eggs, which breeds I can keep together as I would like a mix rather than just a single type (they will be pets as well as egg layers). Basically advice on everything that's related to raising chickens for eggs in a free range environment.

Here are some specific questions.

Our dam has gone cloudy and smells like sulphur

Hi. Our dam has gone cloudy and smells like sulphur. We have only been at the property for 6 months so I'm unsure as to whether it is a seasonal thing or not. The dam is 40m x 30m and 7m deep. Is it something I should be worried about? Thanks for any heap

Pasture improvement

Hi- I am rotating my cows through a few different areas to improve the pasture. Its only a small area - 5 acres divided up. After much research ,some to let grass go to seed then feed and rest- others say never let it get to seed stage ??  Bit confused- dont you need seeds to grow the next lots of grass or will they form better through spreading under the ground when the top third is eaten ??  Should i run the mower over when they have moved on to get more much layer build up ?

thanks

Kyle

Capeweed

Hi everyone,

I have some capeweed on my propery (pretty heavy in about a 10 acre patch). It's not like I hate it a want it gone, but during summer the areas where it grows its so bare whereas other fields are still grassed.

Any ideas/thoughts....do I try eliminate it and sow something new or sow something over it which wll remain in the dryer months?

Selling meat from home or at a market

I am looking for some advice as to where I can get some information on selling Pasture raised pigs & sheep meat. I would only be packing & selling on, the animals would actually be slaughtered at a licensed slaughter house. I am located in South Australia.
