Needing advice on types of farming ventures regarding time management

Hi everyone, We are interested in starting a hobby farm in NE Victoria but need some advice on maintenance and upkeep of certain projects. Before I start I am well aware that farming is no easy task and things take time and money. As a sidenote I'm not as much interested in making a primary income out of this, but more so a combination of needing an agriculturual side of the property for it to be possible to have a dwelling and that it something we are genuinly interested in. I'm a Chiropractor and my fiance an Osteopath, we run our own business.

Raising cattle for meat, how many per acre

Hi all,

My name is Andrew and im new to the site.

I have just bought a small property and am looking at options for livestock. At the moment I will have a one acre paddock to use. I was looking at maybe a couple of cattle for meat. I was hoping to have two, with a view to turning over one a year. I am wondering if an acre would be big enough, and what type of cattle would best suit my purpose? Any thoughts or information would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

Using above ground blue line pipe in cold climate

Hi,

I am in an elevated postion in cold climate that if often below zero in winter, cant seem to see the anywhere, but can blue line ag pipe survive if above ground, or will it freeze and split.

It has been run around one paddock fence line, but have no idea of history of use, nor if it functions as it is not connected to a pump of mine and happens to go to a neighbors.

Sheep / Laying Hen recommendations

Interested to know if anyone has recommendations on sheep and laying hens (eggs). Am looking at setting up small farm (around 45 acres) and wanting to setup small organic eggs and sheep (meat).

For chickens we are looking at : Isa Brown / Rhone Island Reds.

For Sheep we are looking at Damaras or Dorpers.

Would you recommend anything different. Essentially we are looking at lowest upkeep but also still delivering quality eggs / meat for sale.

Thanks again for great forum!

Dying goats

I have lost a couple of goats and am unsure what I am doing wrong. I originally started drenching the goats with Pancur 25 and found that the goats were getting scour and swelling under jaw. A local vet advised that this product does not work in outr area. I then tried Caprine with good results for 6 mths. I have now begun noticing goats with scour which we have been un able to save. It  is usually only one animal at a time and it is usually the young. (3-9mths). The remainder of the heard (12) all appear to be healthy and have no signs of disease.

Burning Off

Hi, We’ve recently purchased a small property and Keen to make it as productive as possible. I’ve read that burning off is a good way to clear weeds and initiate regrowth of native grasses. What does one have to do to conduct a burn, or are there contractors who can manage this? Clearly now is not the time but I’d like to be prepared. Regards, Paulmt7fr

Sores on neck of cattle

Hi, This is my first year on a small hobby farm and we purchased two steers to help keep the grass down. We noticed that one of the steers has these small sores on his neck and shoulders. One of the sores is quite large (approx 4cm wide) but most are smaller lumps and sores. T Any idea what is causing this to him? The other steer has no lumps or sores at all. S
