Help with a small farm layout plan

Hi all, My husband and I are working towards realising our dream of living a full-time life of subsistence farming and in preparation for this I'm trying to map out an efficient, hygienic and healthy farm layout. For example where animal runs / pens, slaughter house, water tanks and septic should be in relation to the house (as in distance from). Also any other out buildings a farm needs that I haven't mentioned.

Cattle eye problems

Hi, Just chasing some information on eye problems in cows. We have found two young steers each with one cloudy eye. I didn't notice any discharge out of the eye. But as we are new to cattle farming I am wondering if anyone can explain the difference between eye problems and what we need to look for. We are thinking it will be either pink eye or a grass seed in the eye. I can't find any symptom list for what happens if the cow does have a grass seed stuck.

Lifestyle farm - beginners tips

Hi guys, I am looking at purchasing a piece of land, about 3 or 4 hours out of Sydney as part of a retirement investment (for use when we retire in however many years it takes). Not that pushed in terms of size but want something at least 10acres. I am a total newbie to this and also was born and raised in South Africa, so do not fully understand any local rules, or laws. I am hoping this forum can help enlighten me on a few things: 1. What are the running costs of a lifestyle farm?

Buying a small farm

I am planning to purchase a small farm, 160 acres in eastern wheatbelt of WA. I have farming experience but I have no idea about taxation and claiming, how much to earn before I can become a business, whether I can still claim a pension, do I run it as a hobby or a business. I train sheepdogs and also teach people how to train dogs. I would like to run app 100 sheep, and perhaps have a farm Stay or similar. Where do I get advise, thanks

How many small farms are out there?

My daughter has a school project on hobby farms and needs to know the number of small farms in Australia (1 acre to 500 acres ideally). We can't find any concrete information online but maybe someone out there knows the answer or can point us in the right direction (Aust Breauro of Stats don't know either)? Also, are there any stats out there on farm machinery? She is looking into the rough $ amount of equipment owned by these hobby farmers. Can anyone help please!! :)

hi all am new to this forum,i have 17 acres of mixed grasses and have 3 steers coming to help keep the grass down,my main question is after about 6 weeks it gets to the point of being out of control ,I have actually mowed this with a ride on [lol] not happening again.had the elders rep here and he told me I had some improved pasture a lot of the grass has red tinges on it, a bit of everything,just purchased this property the previous owners had horses on it.

Calving

This may seem like a dumb question. But here goes. What is the best time to plan calving? Most of the literature and online info says plan for early spring calving. makes sense. However I've noticed that around my area, and on my property when previously leased to a farmer (Pingelly WA). most lambing takes place in June into July, so early to mid winter. This also makes sense as after the first rains in June is when feed starts to grow. Is their a fundamental difference between calving and lambing dates?

Wanting an income new to farming

Hi there, my husband and I are wanting to get into farming and growing. But we don’t know what is the best thing to do for an income. We are city folk and are getting out. Looking for blocks of land now. 2 or 3 hours from Brisbane. We are trying to figure out what is the best thing to do for novices like us. I love to grow so was thinking of Hemp, olives, taro, macadamias. Any suggestions would be great. Hubby wants to try livestock cows, pigs, I would prefer alpacas. Zbg2mbut I am a little worried about not knowing enough in this field.

Small farm as a business

Sorry if this has been covered before but I'm having trouble getting my head around it. I've been over the ATO website and it makes my brain hurt. I thought someone here might have some expreience with it.

 

I have 90 arrable acres and have a small lowline cattle heard that I intend to add to over the next 24 months. Currently I have 1 big 90 acre padock with a good dam. My plan is to devide the 90 acres into 5 padocks and build a small yard area with loading ramp cattle crush etc. also intend to update pasture condition as well as a bit of drought proofing.
