Leaving animals unattended

Hi, I just bought a 30 acres property in heathcote and will be using it as a weekend property. It has four damns and has intact fence lines. I want to get a couple of head of cattle and wanted to know the viability of doing this whilst only being at the property once a week? In addition to having this add to my enjoyment of the property, it is a good way to keep the grass down.

Blackberries

I have  a 1 acre lot in South Gippsland.

I have blackberries around my dam and a paddock that hasnt been grazed for years nor slashed for a year.

I'm looking at borrowing some goats to help clear it up for me.

If I cant find goats to rent then I am thinking of buying  a couple and slaughtering them once the land is sufficiently clear for sheep.

My questions are:

Is this a viable option?

Is there anyone who will rent/loan goats in my area?

Can they be let loose near a dam or will they get bogged/fall in, or otherwise drown?

Showing sheep

Hi everyone,

My wife and seven year old daughter have recently attended a sheep and wool show. Naturally, at the show, there were sheep being judged. My daughter came home and told me that she would like to enter ‘Peaches’, one of our mobile lawn mowing animals from our small hobby flock into a show.

I am planning to buy a small land which is zoned Farming.

But it is a long strip with two roads on both sides - Almost 1km of nature strips

Who is responsible for mowing the nature strips?

Thanks

When can weaned calves go back with the herd

Hi iI need some advise on weaning some 8 month old heifers that I intend to keep.

I have them in the yard (for the last 3 nights) and will keep them there for another week. They are becoming very quiet and the crying is slowing down.

My question is when can I put them with the herd.

All the books say yard wean for 10 days but nothing else.

Land access

In May we are running a field day at Purple Pear Farm looking at sustainable small farms and one topic we need to cover is access to land especially for young farmers.

I wonder if people out there have experiences and opinions on how young people in particular can gain access to land for farming without inheriting it. Love to hear what you think.

Cattle yard suppliers

I'm looking to purchase cattle yards for my small farm and need some to work around 25 head and hold up to 40. Looking at Red River Rural and wondered if anyone has had any dealings with this company and their thoughts on quality, service etc.

Getting in touch with local small scale farmers

Hey guys,

I am not a farmer, I work with Chefs and food maufactureres in Sydney to get great products delivered to there door step. I am looking for small scale farmers interested in growing unique produce. I will provide amounts required a year in advance and only ask you to grow what I know will sell. I am a Chef myself, and have a good understanding of the market.

send me a message if you are interested, I am happy to sit down and chat with anyone.

heres my email.
