Farmers are the most hard working people I know

Hi I'm Jo Mitchell. My husband and I brought our farm near Hervey Bay 5 years ago hoping to create something spectacular with what was a very rundown 50 acres of land. It has taken us most of the five years we have been there to get the place to where it is now. We are lucky in that we live on the beach with a creek running through our property with fishing and mudcrabs, so not all bad.

Wool Roving

Hi all,

I'm getting into handspinning as a hobby and I'm keen to get started as soon as I get set up because to me there's just something about actually creating the yarn with your own two hands that you crochet a scarf out of. Pretty cool actually, like growing your own meat and vegetables :)

What I want to know is whether it's possible to purchase smaller amounts (like 10 - 30kgs) of carded wool roving directly from the producers instead of from a shop or ebay.  Is that a usual thing or is it not a done thing?

Hobby farm ideas and advice

Hi,

I have 160 Acres of land in SA and need some Hobby Farm information.

If we start a hobby farm but only make a small amount of money each year, say $10k does that mean we can't claim any of our expenses such as interest on the loan, insurance etc...? I do not live on the land, we use it as recreation.

If we grow plants and sell them are there any rules or processes we need to abide by? The plants are not edible.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Zero turn ride on mowers

We have just bought a small 4 acre property and have been looking at zero turn ride on mowers. Of course every seller says there's the best but would like to hear from others good or bad experiences.

Farming grants

Hi, my husband & I have just bought 14 acres in Qld & are hoping to be reasonably self sufficient in years to come.

One boundary of the land is river which is unfenced at this time. The neighbours cows have pretty much had free range of our land which is fine as it is free fertiliser & has kept the grass mown but they are also eroding the riverbank in several places. Is there anywhere we can go to apply for a grant to help with fencing costs & purchase of trees to revegetate?

Farm consulting for first time farmers

Hi All,

Just a quick note to recommend the farm consultations offered through Charlie on this site. We have recently bought 100 acres for our tree change and once the excitement of settlement passed, we moved into the 'omg what have we done? we have no idea where to start or what we are doing' phase.

Tick treatment for dogs

Hi I have read an old comment by pindari regarding ticks & a cure for dogs (I think) where they use Sodium Ascorbate (vitamin c) to treat affected animals with quick recovery times. Can anyone or pindari comment a bit more on this as to where you get the product, mixing ratio with milk & how to administer it as once the signs of infection are obvious the dog doesnt want to eat or drink. Has anyone else used or know of anyone else who has used this method, I took one of my dogs to the vet yesterday & have been quoted minimum $600. Thanks Darren
